Because of the fall, we are more sinful than we could ever imagine (Jeremiah 17:9). Not only are we born sinful, credited with Adam’s sin (Romans 5: 12- 19), but we are also responsible for the sins we commit every day. But we are also responsible for the sins we commit every day. Unless….
Because of both our inherited and active brokenness and sin, in order to be saved we need God to pursue us. Why does He do this? Because while we are more sinful than we could ever imagine, we are more loved than we could ever dare hope by God. In His grace, God takes the initiative in establishing a relationship with us, reaches down and captures our hearts, and invites us into a love relationship with Him (John 6: 37-39; 2 Thessalonians 2: 13-14). How did He do that?
God didn’t leave us in our sin and rebellion, He provided the way of salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus lived the life of sinless perfection we can never live and died the death we deserve to die for our sins (John 10: 14-15; Ephesians 5: 25- 27). Through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we hear the blessing of God to all who would believe in Him: You are my child, I love you and have forgiven you (1 John 4:10; Romans 5: 10; Galatians 3: 13). The work of Jesus was not just a general act of goodwill from God to humanity, it was the act that offers redemption to any sinner who believes on Jesus alone for their salvation. How are we convicted of our sins?
Through the Holy Spirit, God is still in the business of transforming lives and transforming this world (Rev 21: 5). By convincing us of our sin and misery apart from Him, enlightening our minds to the knowledge of Christ and by capturing our hearts with the love and mercy of God (Ezekiel 36: 25-27). The Spirit of God opens our eyes to the beauty and offer of salvation in Jesus (John 6: 44-45; Philippians 2: 13). How do I know that I’m saved?
He who began a good work in you will be faithful to complete it (Philippians 1:6). In other words, the One who has captured your heart will never leave you or forsake you. Through the Gospel of Jesus Christ, God has promised His love for you and He will never, ever let you go (1 Cor 1: 1-9). Because of God’s eternal love and mercy, we cannot lose our salvation (Ro 8:1)
